The incident happened in Yonkers on Friday, April 28 around 8:30 p.m., when officers responded to the area of 40 Cliff St. for a reported shooting incident, according to Yonkers Police.

Once arriving, authorities found an injured 14-year-old boy with a gunshot wound to his leg and began rendering first aid, including applying a field tourniquet.

The boy was then taken to an area trauma center with non-life-threatening injuries as other police units began condoning off the area and conducting a search for suspects.

Within minutes after the search began, officers found two men trying to flee the area and placed them into custody as the investigation continued, recovering an unlawfully possessed Smith and Wesson 9mm semi-automatic pistol.

Detectives from the Major Case Squad and Crime Scene Unit then arrived and began interviewing witnesses, looking at surveillance footage, and processing ballistic and forensic evidence.

From this investigation, it was determined that a group of young adults had been congregating in front of 40 Cliff St. when two suspects approached on foot.

One of the suspects then took out a handgun and fired at least nine times in the direction of the crowd before the two men both fled the scene, according to police.

One of these shots had struck the 14-year-old boy's leg.

The investigation resulted in probable cause to charge the two men in the shooting, who are identified as 19-year-old Leroy Gibbs and 20-year-old Jeremiah Hughes, both of Yonkers.

The two men were charged with the following:

  • Second-degree attempted murder;
  • Second-degree criminal possession of a weapon.

Authorities currently believe that the shooting was not a random act and that the group may have been targeted. The investigation remains ongoing, police added.

The case is now being prosecuted by the Westchester County District Attorney's Office. Additional information may be released as it becomes available, authorities said.
